PP Cap, ROPP Cap and Screw Cap: Which Term Means What

A PP cap and a ROPP cap are often the same thing, but not always, because “PP” has two meanings. In the Indian aluminium closure trade, including liquor, edible oil and pharma syrup bottles, PP cap is commonly short for pilfer-proof cap, and an aluminium pilfer-proof cap applied on a roll-on head is a ROPP (Roll-On Pilfer-Proof) cap under a shorter name. In plastics, PP means polypropylene, and a PP cap is a moulded plastic screw cap, which is a different closure on a different neck. Two questions settle which one a quote means: is the cap aluminium or plastic, and does it arrive with its thread already formed?

“PP cap” has two meanings

Both meanings are established, in two industries that sell to the same bottlers.

Where you meet the term PP stands for What the cap is Same as a ROPP cap?
Aluminium closure suppliers, liquor, edible oil and pharma syrup bottles Pilfer-proof An aluminium cap with a band that breaks on first opening, usually rolled onto the neck Yes, in most cases
Plastic closure suppliers, PET and HDPE bottles, tablet containers Polypropylene A moulded plastic cap with its thread already in place No

So “28 mm PP caps” from an aluminium closure maker and from a plastics moulder are closures that fit different bottles and run on different capping heads. The full form of ROPP itself, word by word, is on ROPP cap full form.

The terms a buyer meets, and which are the same thing

Several closure words overlap. Some name the same closure, some are umbrella terms, and a few only sound related.

Term Full form What it means Where it is used Same thing as
ROPP cap Roll-On Pilfer-Proof An aluminium shell whose thread is formed on the bottle at capping, with a break ring Water, carbonated drinks, spirits, oils, pharma syrups PP cap in the aluminium trade
Screw cap None Any cap that arrives with its thread moulded or formed and is turned on Almost every category Includes polypropylene caps; not a ROPP cap
Pilfer-proof cap None Any cap with a band that breaks on first opening Water, spirits, oils, pharma An umbrella term; a ROPP cap is the aluminium kind
ROPP cap with wad None A ROPP cap with a liner disc inside Older trade usage A lined ROPP cap; wad is the old word for liner
CRC Child-resistant closure A push-and-turn or squeeze-and-turn cap Pharma, household chemicals Not a ROPP cap
Flip-off or tear-off seal None An aluminium seal crimped over a rubber stopper Injection vials Not a ROPP cap: crimped, with no thread

The pilfer-proof family is explained in what is a pilfer-proof cap, and the difference between evident, resistant and “proof” in tamper evident vs tamper resistant vs tamper proof. What a wad or liner does is covered in what is a cap liner.

How to tell which cap you are being quoted

Ask two questions and the term stops mattering. The answers put the closure in one row of the table below.

Is it aluminium or plastic? Does the thread come on the cap? What you are buying Capping equipment
Aluminium No, it is formed on the bottle A ROPP cap, whatever the quote calls it Roll-on head with thread and skirt rollers
Plastic Yes, moulded in A plastic screw cap, often polypropylene Torque capper
Aluminium Yes, already threaded A pre-threaded metal screw cap, a different product Torque capper

The neck gives a third check. A ROPP cap is ordered by diameter and height, such as 28/15 mm; a plastic screw cap is ordered against a finish code, such as PCO 1881 or 38-400. The finishes Indian water bottles run on are listed in neck formats on Indian packaged water bottles. The two formats are compared on seal, tamper evidence, machinery and cost in ROPP cap vs screw cap.

PP cap meaning in pharma

In pharma the term splits the same way, but by pack. On liquid oral bottles, a PP cap is usually an aluminium pilfer-proof cap, the same roll-on closure used on beverages, often in smaller diameters than a water bottle takes. On tablet and capsule containers, a PP cap is usually a polypropylene screw cap. Injectable products use neither.

Pharma pack Closure usually used What “PP” refers to, if used
Syrups and suspensions in glass or PET bottles Aluminium ROPP cap with a liner, or a plastic screw cap with a tamper band Pilfer-proof, or polypropylene
Tablets and capsules in HDPE containers Polypropylene screw cap, often with an induction seal, sometimes child-resistant Polypropylene
Injection vials Aluminium crimp seal over a rubber stopper, often with a flip-off button Not used; these are flip-off or tear-off seals
Infusion bottles Aluminium or aluminium-plastic caps over an elastomeric closure Not used

The full form of ROPP in pharma is the same as anywhere else: Roll-On Pilfer-Proof. What differs is the paperwork. In a medicine the closure is part of the container-closure system assessed with the product, so changing it is not a purchasing decision alone. Vial seals and infusion caps are covered by their own ISO standards, ISO 8362-3 for aluminium caps for injection vials and ISO 8872 for aluminium caps for transfusion, infusion and injection bottles, and child-resistant packs by ISO 8317.

The diameters used for pharma syrups sit mostly below the 28 mm beverage size and are listed, as industry reference, in the ROPP cap size chart. R Vision does not make pharma closures.

Where R Vision’s closures sit

Both R Vision closures are ROPP caps, so in the aluminium trade either could be called a PP cap, and neither is a polypropylene cap. Aqua Cap, for packaged drinking water, has a three-part break-system ring; Bev Cap, for beverages, keeps its ring attached so the bottle reseals. Both are 28/15 mm aluminium with a PE ring and a TPE liner, rated to 8 bar, and run on standard roll-on application machinery. The questions bottlers ask about compatibility and machinery are collected in the ROPP closures FAQ.

Frequently asked questions

Are a PP cap and a ROPP cap the same?

Often, but not always. In the aluminium closure trade PP cap is short for pilfer-proof cap, and an aluminium pilfer-proof cap rolled onto the bottle is a ROPP cap. In plastics, PP means polypropylene, and a PP cap is a moulded plastic screw cap. Ask whether the cap is aluminium or plastic and whether its thread is formed on the bottle.

What is the full form of PP cap in pharma?

In pharma, PP cap usually stands for pilfer-proof cap when it refers to an aluminium cap on a syrup or liquid bottle. When it refers to a plastic cap on a tablet or capsule container, PP stands for polypropylene. The pack and the material tell you which meaning is intended.

What is the full form of ROPP cap in pharma?

ROPP stands for Roll-On Pilfer-Proof in pharma, exactly as in beverages and spirits. It is an aluminium cap whose thread is rolled onto the bottle neck during capping, with a band that breaks the first time the bottle is opened. It is used mainly on liquid oral bottles such as syrups.

What is a ROPP cap with wad?

It is a ROPP cap with a liner disc fitted inside the shell. Wad is an older trade word for the liner, the soft layer that presses against the bottle rim and forms the seal. Almost every ROPP cap has one, so the phrase describes an ordinary lined cap rather than a separate type.

Is a flip-off seal a type of ROPP cap?

No. A flip-off seal is an aluminium cap crimped over a rubber stopper on an injection vial, usually with a plastic button that flips off to expose the stopper. It has no thread and is not rolled on, so it is a crimped seal rather than a roll-on pilfer-proof closure.
