A BVS finish is a deep screw finish on a glass wine bottle, also found on some spirits, made to take an aluminium closure with a long skirt that is reformed onto the glass during application. Its designation gives the diameter and the closure height in millimetres, so BVS 30 H 60 is the finish behind the familiar 30 x 60 mm wine cap. The European standard for the family is EN 16293, written for still wines below 1.2 g of CO2 per litre. R Vision does not make wine, liquor or spirits closures; this page is reference for readers specifying those bottles.
What BVS means, and where BVP fits
“Bague” is French for the finish ring on a bottle, and BVS is usually expanded as bague vin suisse, a Swiss wine finish. The standard that now defines it is EN 16293, Packaging, Glass packaging, Deep BVS finishes for still wines. Its scope is a series of deep screw finishes for wines with a CO2 content below 1.2 g per litre, and it covers the thread profile, the sealing surface and bore entrance, the transfer bead and the neck.
CETIE, the international technical centre for bottling, publishes the closure side: cap data sheets for aluminium screw caps on BVS glass finishes, for still wine and for pressurised liquids, and on BVP glass finishes for still liquids. Its bottling guides split the same way, Guide No. 6 for still wines on BVS finishes and Guide No. 2 for non-carbonated liquids, foodstuffs and pharmaceutical products on BVP finishes. CETIE ties the still-wine limit of 1.2 g per litre to a maximum CO2 partial pressure of about 1 bar relative, which it describes as compatible with the performance of standard BVS caps.
BVP is the related family of screw finishes for non-carbonated products. Glass makers list it for spirits in forms such as BVP 18 STD and BVP 31.5 H 60.
How a BVS finish differs from a standard ROPP finish
A BVS finish is deeper, written with a height, and drawn for a closure whose long skirt is reformed during application. A standard 28 mm ROPP finish on a water or soft drink bottle is short, and its closure is sized to it separately, as in 28/15 mm.
| Standard 28 mm roll-on pilferproof finish | Deep BVS or pilferproof spirits and wine finish | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical product | Packaged drinking water, soft drinks, juices | Still wine, spirits, liqueurs |
| How it is written | MCA family, or IS 7511 (Part 4) standard 28 | BVS 30 H 60, 28H44, 31,5H60 |
| Depth to the underside of the locking ring | 15.17 to 15.67 mm on IS 7511 (Part 4) standard 28 | Up to 31.70 to 32.20 mm on the IS 30 mm extra deep |
| Closure | Short skirt aluminium ROPP, such as 28/15 mm | Long skirt aluminium closure, such as 30 x 60 mm |
| Pressure | Water and carbonated beverages | Still products; pressurised wine needs its own BVS cap sheet |
A “BVS mouth for a 28 mm ROPP closure” is the 28 H 44 designation. CETIE’s data sheet for two-start thread pilferproof finishes lists 28H44 alongside 30H60 and 31,5H60, for sweet liquids such as liqueurs, compatible with BVP caps. It is a 28 mm finish with a much taller neck than a 28 mm water finish, so a short water cap will not fit it and a 28 x 44 mm cap will not fit a water bottle.
Dimensions for spirits and wine bottle closures
There is no single spirits size. Indian liquor bottles are governed by IS 1662, which calls up the Indian roll-on pilferproof finishes, while European wine and liqueur glass carries the BVS, BVP and two-start series. The figures below are the published ones.
| Finish | Published by | Closure it takes | Published dimensions | Used on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BVS 30 H 60 | EN 16293; CETIE cap sheet | 30 x 60 mm long skirt | One maker’s closure: diameter 29.75 mm plus or minus 0.15, height 59.5 mm plus or minus 0.5, shell 0.23 mm plus or minus 0.01 | Still wine, some spirits |
| BVS 31.5 H 60 | Glass maker catalogues | 31.5 x 60 mm | Designation only | Premium still wine |
| 28H44, 30H60, 31,5H60 two-start pilferproof | CETIE GME 30.14 | Caps made for standard BVP finishes | Designation only | Liqueurs and sweet liquids |
| BVP 18 STD, BVP 31.5 H 60 | Glass maker catalogues | Aluminium screw caps for BVP finishes | Designation only | Spirits |
| 28 mm standard | IS 7511 (Part 4) | 28 mm ROPP | Thread 26.77 to 27.41 mm, ring depth 15.17 to 15.67 mm | IS 1662 bottles of 375 ml to 750 ml |
| 31.5 mm standard and deep | IS 7511 (Part 4) | 31.5 mm ROPP, taller on the deep finish | Thread 29.89 to 30.53 mm; ring depth 15.17 to 15.67 mm standard, 21.14 to 21.64 mm deep | 750 ml Indian made foreign liquor under IS 1662 |
| 30 mm extra deep | IS 7511 (Part 4) | 30 mm long skirt ROPP | Thread 27.99 to 28.63 mm, ring depth 31.70 to 32.20 mm | 750 ml Indian made foreign liquor under IS 1662 |
| 25 mm standard | IS 7511 (Part 4) | 25 mm ROPP | Thread 24.16 to 24.66 mm, ring depth 13.90 to 14.28 mm | IS 1662 bottles of 180 ml and 250 ml |
The Indian 30 mm extra deep finish measures only 27.99 to 28.63 mm across its thread, so a spirits bottle can caliper like a 28; how to measure bottle cap size shows how the depth tells them apart. The European and Indian series are parallel rather than interchangeable, so do not assume a BVS 30 H 60 cap fits an IS 30 mm extra deep bottle without a trial. The full IS 7511 (Part 4) table is in neck finish standards on Indian glass bottles.
The capacity rule comes from IS 1662: 28 mm for 750 ml, 500 ml and 375 ml bottles, 25 mm for 250 ml and 180 ml, and for Indian made foreign liquor a 750 ml bottle may take a 31.5 mm standard or deep finish or a 30 mm extra deep finish. The skirt consequences are worked through in long skirt vs short skirt ROPP caps, and the 30 mm size in 30mm ROPP caps.
Which closures seat on these finishes
A BVS finish takes an aluminium screw cap with an extended skirt that is reformed during application, the redraw that CETIE’s guide names, or a plastic screw cap made for it. The Indian deep and extra deep finishes take long skirt ROPP closures, often with anti-refill fitments on spirits, which liquor bottle caps in India covers along with excise labels. None of these takes a plastic screw cap made for a GPI thread; that distinction is set out in GPI and SPI finishes against ROPP finishes. Glass finishes for short ROPP closures are listed in glass bottle neck finishes for ROPP caps.

Frequently asked questions
What is a BVS neck finish?
It is a deep screw finish on a glass bottle for wine, made to take an aluminium closure with a long skirt that is reformed onto the glass at application, or a matching plastic screw cap. The European standard EN 16293 defines the deep BVS family for still wines with less than 1.2 g of CO2 per litre.
What does 30 H 60 mean on a BVS finish?
The 30 is the nominal diameter of the finish in millimetres and the 60 corresponds to the height of the closure it is made for, so BVS 30 H 60 takes the 30 x 60 mm long skirt wine closure. One maker’s published closure for it measures 29.75 mm in diameter and 59.5 mm in height, with a 0.23 mm aluminium shell.
What is a BVS mouth for a 28 mm ROPP closure?
It is the 28 H 44 finish: a 28 mm diameter with a neck drawn for a closure 44 mm tall. CETIE lists 28H44 among its two-start pilferproof finishes for liqueurs and sweet liquids, compatible with BVP caps. It is much taller than the standard 28 mm finish on a water bottle, so the two closures are not interchangeable.
What neck finish dimensions do spirits bottles use in India?
IS 1662 sets 28 mm for 375 ml to 750 ml liquor bottles and 25 mm for 180 ml and 250 ml, and allows a 750 ml Indian made foreign liquor bottle a 31.5 mm standard or deep finish or a 30 mm extra deep finish. The dimensions are in IS 7511 Part 4, where the 30 mm extra deep finish is 31.70 to 32.20 mm deep to the underside of its locking ring.
Does R Vision make BVS or spirits closures?
No. R Vision manufactures 28/15 mm aluminium ROPP closures for packaged drinking water and beverages only. It does not make liquor, wine or spirits closures, and makes nothing for BVS, BVP or deep spirits finishes.
