Custom Printed and Embossed Bottle Caps

R Vision decorates its 28/15 mm aluminium ROPP closures on both surfaces: the top can be plain, litho printed or embossed, with hot foiling available on Bev Cap, and the side can be plain or litho printed. Colours are customised to the brand. Decoration sets the minimum order, stepping from 50,000 caps for plain silver to 200,000 for plain colours and 300,000 for litho printing, on a lead time of 4 to 6 weeks.

Key takeaways

  • Top decoration: plain, litho printing or embossing. Hot foiling is available on Bev Cap.
  • Side decoration: plain or litho printing.
  • Colours are customised to the brand, confirmed against your artwork at enquiry.
  • Available finishes: MCA I/II/III, MCA 7.5 R, MCA 7.5 RF, PET BPF.
  • Decoration sets the MOQ tier: 50,000 plain silver, 200,000 plain colours, 300,000 litho printing.
  • Lead time is 4 to 6 weeks, and for printed caps the clock runs from artwork approval, because the plates are made to your artwork.
  • Both closures are 28/15 mm aluminium with a PE ring and a TPE liner, rated to 8 bar.

Why decoration is worth the step

A closure is the smallest branded surface on a bottle and the one a customer touches first. On a shelf of packaged water where most bottles carry the same white plastic cap, an aluminium closure in a brand colour reads as a different product before the label is considered. The practical point is that decoration is a manufacturing step, not an add-on, so it is specified with the cap rather than arranged afterwards.

R Vision makes both of its closures, Aqua Cap for packaged drinking water and Bev Cap for beverages, in one size, 28/15 mm, and decorates them as part of the run.

Decoration options

Surface Options Notes
Top Plain Base silver finish
Top Litho printing Printed to your artwork
Top Embossing Raised relief formed into the cap
Top Hot foiling Available on Bev Cap
Side Plain Base silver finish
Side Litho printing Printed to your artwork
Colour Customised to brand Confirmed against artwork at enquiry

Litho printing

Litho printing puts artwork onto the cap surface. It is the option most brands mean when they say “printed caps”, and it applies to the top, the side, or both. Because the printing plates are made against your artwork, litho carries the highest setup and the highest minimum order, and the plates then serve every repeat order that keeps the same design.

Embossing

Embossing forms a raised relief into the metal rather than adding ink. It reads as texture in the hand and catches light on shelf, and because it is formed rather than printed it does not scuff off. Embossing works on its own or under a printed or coloured finish, and it needs tooling made for the relief.

Hot foiling

Hot foiling applies a metallic foil finish as a separate pass. R Vision lists it as available on Bev Cap. It is a premium finishing effect and, like the other decorated options, it adds a stage to the run.

How each decoration is produced

On aluminium closures generally, colour and print go onto flat, coated metal before the shell is drawn, while relief and foil are added to the formed top. That order explains most of what a buyer is asked for: printed artwork has to allow for the metal stretching as the shell is formed, and embossed artwork has to allow for the tool that presses it.

Decoration Where it sits in the process What the setup is What the artwork needs Minimum order tier
Plain silver Coated metal, no colour None specific to your brand Nothing 50,000
Plain colour Colour coating on the metal before forming Coating changeover to your shade A colour reference 200,000
Litho print, top or side Printed on flat metal before the shell is drawn Printing plates made to your artwork, registration Final artwork, colour references, allowance for forming 300,000
Embossing Pressed into the top panel A relief tool made for your design A relief drawing with line weights the tool can hold Confirm at enquiry
Hot foiling, Bev Cap A foil pass on the top A foil die for your design A clean single-colour foil layer Confirm at enquiry

Fine detail is the thing most often lost. A 28 mm top panel is a small surface, and very thin lines or small type in an embossed or foiled design can fill in or break up. Keep the design bold on the top, and put anything statutory or small on the label rather than the cap.

Colour matching

Colours are customised to the brand. Exact colour references, artwork formats and the approval route are agreed at enquiry rather than published here, because they depend on which decoration you choose and on the artwork you supply. Ask for that specification with the quote so your design team works to the right brief from the start.

Colour on metal behaves differently from colour on paper or a plastic label. Across metal decorating, a transparent tint over bare aluminium gives a metallic shade with the silver showing through, while an opaque colour needs a base coat under it. So a brand shade matched on a carton will not read the same on a cap until it has been proofed on metal.

Step What happens What the buyer does
1. Reference The brand supplies its colour reference and, ideally, a physical sample of the shade Send the reference used on your label or carton
2. Proof on metal The shade is laid down on coated aluminium, not on paper Judge it under the lighting your pack is sold under
3. Approval One proof is signed as the master for the shade Keep your copy of the signed master
4. Production check Caps from the run are compared against the master Agree in the specification how close counts as a match
5. Repeat orders Later runs are matched to the same signed master Quote the master reference on every reorder

Agreeing the tolerance in the specification, and holding a signed master on both sides, is what settles a colour dispute later. If the colour itself is doing signalling work on shelf, what water bottle cap colours mean covers the conventions Indian buyers already read into them.

Finishes

Both closures are available in these finishes, which describe the neck finish the cap is supplied against rather than the decoration on its outside:

Finish
MCA I
MCA II
MCA III
MCA 7.5 R
MCA 7.5 RF
PET BPF

Match the finish to the bottle and the fill you are running; glass bottle neck finishes for ROPP caps explains what each MCA finish is. If you are unsure which applies, send the bottle specification and the fill type with your enquiry.

What you need to supply

Decoration work starts from artwork, and an enquiry moves faster when these are ready:

  1. The decoration you want, by surface: top plain, litho, embossed or foiled, and side plain or litho.
  2. Your artwork, in the format the plant confirms at enquiry.
  3. Your brand colour reference, so the shade can be matched during setup.
  4. The bottle neck finish and cap size, so the decoration is applied to a closure that fits.
  5. The fill type, hot fill, cold fill or carbonated, which governs the liner and the seal.
  6. Your volume, which decides the minimum order tier the design falls into.

Artwork formats, the proofing route and colour approval are confirmed at enquiry rather than assumed. Get them in writing before a printed run.

How decoration changes MOQ and lead time

Every decoration option adds a process step, and the step is what sets the minimum.

Order type MOQ What the setup covers
Plain silver 50,000 No customer-specific setup
Plain colours 200,000 Colour coating and a line changeover for your shade
Litho printing 300,000 Printing plates made to your artwork, plus registration setup

Lead time is 4 to 6 weeks across the range. Printed and foiled orders spend part of that on plate making and approval, which is why artwork sign-off is the stage a buyer most directly controls. Repeat orders on unchanged artwork skip it. Why closure minimums are set by setup rather than metal is explained in what MOQ means for bottle caps, and how a decorated run spreads its one-time costs into the price per thousand is in what drives the cost of a ROPP cap.

A practical route for a new brand: run plain silver at 50,000 to prove the closure on your capping line, then commit artwork once the specification is settled. The cap does not change when the decoration does, so nothing learned in the first run is wasted. The full sequence from enquiry to despatch is in bulk ROPP cap orders, and water brands buying direct from the plant can start from water bottle caps wholesale.

A decorated closure earns its place on a premium water bottle or a beverage aimed above the commodity shelf, and the wider choice of closure for a new label is covered in choosing caps for a water brand.

Frequently asked questions

Can bottle caps be printed with my brand artwork?

Yes. R Vision offers litho printing on the top of the cap, on the side, or on both, with colours customised to the brand. Printing plates are made against your artwork, which is why printed caps carry a higher minimum order than plain ones and why artwork approval sits on the critical path of the lead time.

What is the difference between embossing and printing on a cap?

Printing applies artwork in ink to the cap surface. Embossing forms a raised relief into the metal itself, so it is felt as texture and catches light rather than sitting on top as a layer. Embossing does not scuff off the way a printed surface can, and the two can be combined on the same closure.

What is the minimum order for custom printed caps?

At R Vision, 300,000 caps for litho printing and 200,000 for plain colours, against 50,000 for plain silver. The steps reflect setup: colour needs a coating changeover, and litho needs plates made specifically for your artwork, both of which are paid once and spread across the run.

How is a brand colour matched on an aluminium cap?

The brand supplies its colour reference, the shade is proofed on coated aluminium rather than paper, and one proof is signed as the master. Production and repeat runs are checked against that master. Agree in the specification how close a match must be, because colour on metal reads differently from the same shade on a label.

Does printing make the lead time longer?

Lead time is quoted at 4 to 6 weeks for both plain and decorated orders, but a printed order spends part of that window on plate making and artwork approval. Approving artwork promptly is the fastest way for a buyer to protect the schedule. Repeat orders on unchanged artwork skip the plate stage.

Can I get hot foiled caps?

Hot foiling is available on Bev Cap, R Vision’s beverage closure. It is applied as a separate finishing pass. Discuss it with your enquiry along with the rest of the decoration, because it adds a stage to the run and should be planned into the schedule rather than added late.
